Why would we post a Give Back Gift Guide? Because we are so blessed in so many ways. My husband and I have a lovely house. We have cars to drive to work. We have gifts to give our families. We never lack food or clothing. In the midst of all the abundance, it’s easy forget that there are people all over the world who lack basic necessities every day. As we remember the One who gave everything to redeem our helpless, broken souls this holiday season, we want to give back some of the abundance He’s blessed us with.
Give Back Gift Guide #1: fashionABLE.
These gorgeous scarves come in a plethora of colors and styles — perfect for colder weather! Today only, fashionABLE is offering free shipping on all orders.
From their site, this is how fashionABLE gives back:
Your purchase of a fashionABLE scarf creates sustainable business for women in Africa. Our commitment as a non-profit is to the development of people — fashionABLE works with women who have been exploited due to the effects of poverty. So, when you purchase a scarf you are providing jobs, and then we send the net profits back to holistically rehabilitate more women. This is the beauty of non-profit…. Scarves provide jobs, profits provide restoration.
Give Back Gift Guide #2: Threads by the Shine Project.
We especially love the metallic beaded Nykelle bracelet. It’s perfect for holiday parties or those days when you need a little extra sparkle! Threads is having a buy 2 get 1 free sale until midnight tonight. Use code Holiday33.
Threads is a cause driven business that changes the future of at risk youth. They come from various backgrounds, but all have one thing in common, they want to break the cycle. By employing them, we instill values of self reliance and hard work. They are paid fair wages for the bracelets they make, and in turn are able to pay their way through school. Many of Threads employees are first generation college students. They dream of becoming nurses, broadcasters, writers and engineers.
Give Back Gift Guide #3: Toms.
Okay, so, you probably already know about Toms. But I love them so much that I couldn’t leave them out! My sweet husband recently bought me a pair for my birthday, and I can’t tell you how comfy they are. This brown herringbone pair would make a perfect gift for any comfort-loving girl on your list. And to celebrate the holiday season, Toms is offering free shipping until December 31st.
In case you’re not familiar with TOMS, here’s why they’re on the Give Back Gift Guide:
With every purchase, TOMS gives a pair of new shoes to a child in need. The shoe that we give most frequently is a black, unisex canvas slip-on with a sturdy sole. Black shoes are required for school in many countries, and the sturdy sole allows children to run and play with their feet protected. We’ve found that the classic TOMS slip-on style works well, because when shoelaces break, many families cannot afford to replace them.
Give Back Gift Guide #4: Better Life Bags.
Rebecca sells custom, Design Your Own bags that make the perfect accessory! I love this patchwork Alicia bag and the new holiday glitter clutches. Today only, use the code GLITTERME to get $15 off your holiday clutch.
We hire women, who otherwise cannot get jobs, to work for BLB. We rent them a sewing machine and tools while teaching them a skill set that allows them to become a primary or secondary provider in their families. Most of these women are first generation immigrants from countries such as Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, and Yemen, so we are also able to provide them with much needed fellowship and friendship as we visit their homes to deliver fabric and pick up orders But the bags are not the focus of my business. I desire to use my business and the platform it gives me to help others. Since Better Life Bags started, I had been giving a percentage of the profits to low income entreprenuers in developing countries through Kiva.org. I still plan on doing this in moderation. However, I also want to invest in the community God has placed us in currently. We moved to Detroit in April 2010 to invest in a small community here called Hamtramck. With 27 different languages spoken, a median income of $23,000, and housing values falling by 80% there is much need here. The current Better Life project is to build a playground on an empty lot next door to my house. This will provide a much needed safe haven for kids this summer.
Give Back Gift Guide #5: Pure Charity.
This is a brand-new concept that has us so, so excited! Here’s how it works: you join Pure Charity, install the browser plug-in or link your credit card to your account, then shop. That’s it! Pure Charity has partnered with companies like Apple, Target, West Elm, and Sephora. When you shop using your Pure Charity account online, those merchants donate a percentage of your purchase to the charity of your choice. Just like that. So even if you’re not shopping at a cause-based business, your dollars make a difference. Check out the video for more info.
This could revolutionize the way we think about our money. It’s a winsome way to capitalize on capitalism, by leveraging what we already do and spend to bring more giving funds to those in need.
